Today marks the launch of our Harnessing Change initiative to challenge forced marriages in the UK. So what is 'Harnessing Change'? It’s an innovative Programme that recruits a select number of well established public figures and distinguished leaders from across media, business, as well as the public and third sectors to advocate for consent in marriage, support debates on forced marriages and related issues and strengthen key messages against the harmful practices. It is envisaged that having well known public figures, who will become Global Ambassadors - from across a broad range of sectors, at a national level and some cases, where appropriate, at an international level will help bring attention to the instrumental work of The SHARAN Project and the UK government around issues such as forced marriages. In recognition of the importance of deeper community engagement, the Ambassador Programme will comprise of a parallel tier of Community Ambassadors to be recruited from across community leaders, key religious and faith groups. Community Ambassadors will be geographically dispersed at a grass roots level to profile the issues and detrimental effects of forced marriage and current legal standing within the UK to bring a more local perspective. The Ambassadorship Programme which comprises of a cross section of influencers, has been designed to ensure that through drawing upon the skills and experience of a mixed set of highly qualified individuals with varying levels of influence - will help to effectively reach out and disseminate critical information and key messages around the criminalisation of the act of forced marriage in the UK. The ultimate aim of this project is to drive and harness real and meaningful social change in existing attitudes amongst specific communities who may otherwise not be aware or willing to engage with official authorities For more details about this programme and how you can get involved, please contact us for all media queries, please contact
